How to Make a Soy Candle Burn Evenly: 7 Simple Tips

An even-burning candle looks better, releases its fragrance more consistently and helps you enjoy the wax properly. Fortunately, a few simple candle-care habits can make a noticeable difference.

At TickleCandles, every candle is developed through repeated burn tests. We observe the flame, wick behaviour, wax pool and container temperature throughout the candle’s life—not only during its first burn. Here are seven practical lessons that can help your soy candle burn safely and evenly.

1. Read the candle’s safety label

Always begin with the care and safety instructions supplied with your candle. Different combinations of wax, fragrance, wick and container can behave differently, so the manufacturer’s instructions should take priority over general advice.

Place the candle upright on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from anything that could catch fire.

2. Trim the wick before each burn

Before lighting, trim the wick to approximately 5 mm, unless the candle’s label states otherwise.

A wick that is too long can create a larger flame, smoke, soot or uneven burning. Remove any loose or mushroomed wick material, but avoid cutting the wick excessively short because it may struggle to stay lit.

Make sure all trimmings are removed before lighting the candle.

3. Give the first burn enough time

Lighting a candle for only a few minutes can leave a narrow pool of melted wax around the wick. Repeating very short burns can contribute to tunnelling, where unused wax remains around the sides of the jar.

During the first burn, allow enough time for a steady, even wax pool to develop. However, never continue burning solely to force the wax completely to the edge after reaching the maximum burn time stated on the safety label.

The correct burn time can vary between candles, so always follow the instructions provided with yours.

4. Keep the candle away from draughts

Open windows, fans, air-conditioning units and busy walkways can push the flame towards one side of the jar. This may cause the wax to melt unevenly and can encourage flickering or soot.

Choose a calm area with good clearance around and above the candle. Make sure the surface is level so the liquid wax does not naturally collect on one side.

5. Avoid repeated short burns

If possible, light your candle when you have enough time to enjoy it properly. Repeatedly lighting and extinguishing it after only a short period may prevent an even wax pool from developing.

Longer is not always better, though. Never exceed the candle’s stated maximum burn time, and extinguish it sooner if the flame becomes unusually high, starts smoking or the container feels excessively hot.

6. Keep the wax pool clean and let it cool

Keep the wax free from matches, wick trimmings and other debris. Foreign material can act like an additional wick and affect how the candle burns.

After extinguishing the flame, allow the wax to cool and solidify fully before moving or relighting the candle. Never touch or move a candle while the wax is liquid or the container is hot.

7. Know when to stop burning

Never burn a candle all the way to the base of its container. Stop using it when it reaches the minimum wax level shown on its safety label.

Extinguish the candle immediately if you notice persistent smoking, an abnormally large flame, damage to the jar or any other unusual behaviour. Let it cool completely before inspecting it.

Why repeated burn testing matters

Candle performance depends on more than the type of wax. The jar diameter, fragrance, wick and changing wax level all affect the way a candle burns.

A candle may behave well during its first lighting but become warmer as the wax level moves lower in the jar. This is why TickleCandles tests candles through repeated burn cycles and observes their performance at different stages.

Burn testing and good candle care work together: testing helps create a well-balanced candle, while correct care helps customers enjoy it as intended.

What should you do if your candle starts tunnelling?

First, extinguish the candle and allow it to cool completely. Before the next burn:

  • Trim the wick correctly.
  • Check that the candle is sitting level.
  • Move it away from draughts.
  • Allow a steady wax pool to develop within the labelled maximum burn time.

Avoid wrapping a burning candle in foil, paper or other materials. These can alter how heat builds around the container. If tunnelling continues or the candle behaves unusually, stop using it and contact the maker for advice.

Candle safety reminder

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep, and keep it away from children, pets, curtains, furniture and other flammable materials.
